About – Trout River Environmental Committee

Trout River Environmental Committee works to restore and conserve the natural integrity of our nine watersheds, and to promote good environmental stewardship. We operate in the Stanley Bridge to Cavendish area of North Central Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Founded in 1993, TREC was incorporated in 1999. Currently, TREC undertakes a range of activities including integrated watershed management, community engagement, and environmental education. TREC is very much a community led group, and we support local farmers, landowners, residents, businesses, and fishers.

We are a registered charity, managed by a volunteer board of directors. We employ an Executive Director to manage day-to-day operations, a Project Manager, and students during the summer. To contact the Executive Director, Shayla Steinhoff, e-mail

Our funding is provided by the Provincial and Federal Government, by the Wildlife Conservation Fund, by local businesses, and by residents:

Thanks to the Government of Prince Edward Island for providing our core funding through the Watershed Management Fund, summer staff funding through Skills PEI, and project funding through various departments.

Thanks to the Wildlife Conservation Fund for summer and winter project funding, and for topping up our summer staff salaries. Much of this funding comes from people buying conservation license plates and hunting, trapping, and fishing licenses.

Thanks to the Government of Canada for providing funding for summer staff under a number of programs, funding for internships, and for project funding.
