TREC has been banding and monitoring tree swallows in an effort to track this declining species population, while providing safe nesting habitat via nesting boxes.We are currently working with professional banders to train our staff to band young and adult tree swallows. With ten watershed groups involved across the Island this project has seen many recaptures (birds banded in previous years who have made the migration back), including a hatch year bird.What is a hatch year bird? A hatch-year (HY) bird is a term used by ornithologists and bird banders to identify a bird that is in its very first calendar year of life. Meaning this bird was hatched in a nesting box on PEI, banded, and returned the next year! This is exciting news as the survival rate for hatch year tree swallows can be as low as 20%.
