Meeting with three MPs and a Minister

On Wednesday May 15th, the Don’t Frack PEI committee met first with PEI Minister of Environment Janice Sherry, then with three MPs – Kirsty Duncan, Liberal environment critic; Sean Casey, MP for Charlottetown; and Wayne Easter, MP for Malpeque. We explained the concerns that we all have about fracking, listened to their views, and discussed next steps. Both meetings exceeded our expectations and have resulted in even more requests for meetings and presentations. The momentum has started, so please help us keep this issue in the forefront of people’s minds.

Public meeting about fracking, oil, and the alternatives

What energy sources are you happy to see developed on PEI? Should we allow fracking and oil drilling off PEI, or expand wind and solar? What are the real hidden costs? What does the future hold? You are invited to a meeting on April 16th, 7pm, at Hunter River Community Hall (behind Harmony House) to hear about how our drinking water, our fishing and tourism industries, our air quality, our wildlife, and our way of life, are all under threat from the rush to secure cheap energy. Promised Land, and other news

On Friday March 22nd, the City Cinema is showing “Promised Land”, a story about fracking. Don’t Frack PEI will be there, and we’ll be heading to the pub for a discussion after the movie, all are invited. City Cinema is showing the movie six times, the details can be found here: http://citycinema.net

Our group has met with the PC Party to discuss our concerns over fracking. We will shortly be meeting with the NDP, have put in a request to make a presentation to the Standing Committee on Agriculture, Environment, Energy and Forestry, and are talking to the Green Party. We intend to help all parties become informed of the issues, and of the alternatives to shale gas – e.g. sun, wind, water.

Our presentations to the CARI Seniors Active Living Centre was well received, as was the presentation that we made at a meeting hosted by two watershed groups – with 45 attendees. We expect to make many more presentations in the near future.

Don’t Frack PEI group is officially formed

We had a great meeting on January 22nd with a very good turn-out for the coldest night of the year so far. It was great to see in attendance representatives from the fishing and agricultural communities as well as watershed groups, unions, social and environmental justice groups and of course individual citizens who want to protect PEI’s land, water, and air.

For those who could not make it – we now have an official anti-fracking group on PEI. The name is “Don’t Frack PEI” with a tagline ”Wind, Water, Sun – Energy for the Long Run.” Details of our group can be found on our ‘about’ page.
