Learning about TREC: Wednesday October 15th, 7pm.

This event is for those who are interested in learning more about the work that Trout River Environmental Committee does to restore and conserve the natural integrity of our nine watersheds, our organization, memberships, and how to get more involved.

Want to learn more about tree planting efforts, local environmental events, watershed health, wildlife monitoring, water quality monitoring, planting for pollinators, trails and more?

Come by the Stanley Bridge Women’s Institute Wednesday October 15th at 7pm and listen to a presentation by Executive Director Shayla Steinhoff, as well as words from our board and members of the Stanley Bridge WI.

We are happy to partner with the Stanley Bridge Women’s Institute on this event, and look forward to seeing new and familiar faces!

Volunteer Fall Tree Planting Day

TREC is hosting our annual Fall Volunteer Tree Planting Day Saturday, October 18th, 10am to 12pm!

Volunteers will meet on site at 484 Taylor Road, North Granville, PE C0A 1EO and then follow map (see facebook event page here: https://www.facebook.com/share/19yDqLntk9/ ) for driving instruction to the location. TREC will be on site to direct and signage will be posted. If you do not wish to drive your vehicle on a farm lane, please let us know and we can drive you down to the site from the home address. Please see map for details.

The site is accessible and will include mowed trails, allowing for all age ranges to be able to attend this event. In total TREC plans to plant around 150 native trees, plants, and shrubs within the area.

Volunteers are encouraged to wear proper footwear, bring their own pair of gloves, and water. Shovels will be provided, but feel free to bring your own as well.

Lunch will also be provided on site! Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions.

💧 TREC has just recently completed a project on Anderson’s Creek which works to improve fish passage from head of tide, to upstream habitat. As part of our regular Riparian Health Assessments, we also complete crossing assessments which help us to determine if culverts and other crossings allow for proper fish passage or need to be replace/mitigated in the future. 🐟 Last year it was determined that a crossing on St Marys Rd in Stanley Bridge road did not allow for fish passage, making it difficult for brook trout and other aquatic species to migrate to suitable habitat further upstream. With help from local contractors and professionals, as well as guidance from the provincial and federal government, TREC installed rock weirs in order to elevate the water level below the culvert, allowing water to flow within the crossing and allow for proper fish passage. These rock weirs are a series of constructed pools, which work to gradually elevate water levels, and create fish habitat. Check out the before and after photos of this crossing! ... 🦇 Happy Bat Week and Happy Halloween from TREC 🦇Pictured is the Little Brown Bat or Little Brown Myotis. Bats are amazing creatures, which roost and hibernate on PEI. They love to live in riparian areas and mixed forest types roosting under the bark of dead trees and in large tree cavities. Bats can also be found roosting in man made structures like buildings and bat boxes, as well as hibernating in old sandstone wells! It is important to conserve sandstone wells on PEI , if you or someone you know has an old sandstone well, please let us know!Little brown bats and other bats on PEI can also make amazing pest control. While nursing their pups these bats can eat up to half their body weight in insects in just one night! We along with other watershed groups under the @peiwatershedalliance PEI Watershed Alliance , with the help of experts like the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative monitor this and other declining bat species on PEI. Thank you to Emma MacNeill with @hcwg.pei Hunter-Clyde Watershed Group for helping TREC complete headwater surveys last week! We are thankful for the close partnerships we have with our neighboring watershed groups 🌲 Headwater surveys are conducted twice annually in the spring and fall by collecting data at the very start of a stream. These surveys help us understand the health of our headwaters, collect baseline data, and gather information on sites that are at risk of running dry due to climate change and other impacts 🌎During these surveys we collect data on water flow/presence, where a headwater starts year to year, canopy cover, air and water temperature, as well as presence of springs 💧. ... 🌳 A big thank you to everyone who came out to our TREC Volunteer Tree Planting Day this past Saturday! Together we planted 150 native trees and shrubs! These efforts will work to provide future habitat for wildlife and increase Wabanaki-Acadian Forest on PEI. 🐦This concludes our tree planting for 2025 🌲 If you live in the Stanley Bridge, Cavendish, Granville area and are interested in having tree planting completed in spring of 2026 please contact us at director@troutriverec.ca to see if you have a suitable property. 🌳 TREC focuses our tree planting efforts on areas that:- Are in the riparian zone (an area around a watercourse or wetland)- Lack native species diversity.- Are hedgerows on farm fields.- Where planting could improve habitat, provide shade for streams, restore stream banks, prevent erosion and sedimentation.- Provide a community good, such as in a public park.🌱 You can also sign up for the PEI 2 Billion Trees Program!
