With support from the PEI Wildlife Conservation Fund and Raspberry Point Oysters, TREC has been working to support Osprey populations in our watershed. Pictured centre in the photo is a new Osprey perch which has been installed along Hope River at Raspberry Point Oyster Co. Tours. This new perch will support Osprey populations by providing safe nesting habitat. Providing these man-made perches can also dissuade Ospreys from making their nests on electrical poles.Ospreys prefer to live near water, either fresh or salt, where large numbers of fish are present, and may be most common around major coastal estuaries and salt marshes, but also around large lakes, reservoirs, and rivers.Human-caused threats to Ospreys include vehicle collisions and electrocution by power lines as Ospreys are very tolerant of humans and will nest near roads and infrastructure. Baling twine can also be a threat in areas where farming is common as Ospreys may attempt to use this and other garbage as nesting material. However, the greatest threat to Osprey populations is environmental contamination of their aquatic ecosystems and loss of habitat to build their nests.Pesticides and heavy metals like mercury threaten Ospreys because they have a strict diet of almost entirely fish, & tend to hunt in the same small location. These toxins in the water will contaminate the fish and then be ingested. The pesticide DDT was a significant threat to Ospreys because, when ingested, it would stay in the bird’s system and make it difficult for them to absorb calcium, leading to brittle eggshells that could break before hatching. Because Ospreys typically lay only 2-3 eggs at a time, this significantly decreased their population. Once DDT was banned, their numbers recovered rapidly. As part of the Osprey Perch Project, TREC created an informational brochure which will be given out on Raspberry Point Oyster boat tours at the location of the perch. You can visit the Resources page of our website, troutriverec.ca or click the link here: chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://troutriverec.ca/wp-content/uploads/20... to find the digital brochure. ...
